Alter is a Saber class Servant, a high level magic familiar that requires a contract with a skilled mage or bottom line: a person in possession of magical power. Servants feed off their Master's mana or magical energy to maintain their existence and those without a contract can also sustain themselves by consuming human souls or the blood of mages but this is (horrible) a temporary fix at best.
Once a pact is formed, the Master will receive three Reiju or command seals in the form of a tattoo somewhere on their bodies, most commonly located on the back of the hand. these are three claims of absolute obedience or the crystallization of a great magic, that a Master has over a Servant. Examples include forcing a Servant to perform an act they otherwise wouldn't, or traveling a great distance in the blink of an eye for protection. These should not be used lightly and are typically saved for emergency situations where a Servant cannot complete a task on their own without the Reiju's assistance. Corresponding with the three uses, each Reiju marking has three parts to it, strokes, that glow red and then fade upon usage. Once all three have been used up, the contract has concluded and both parties are free to either form a new contract or go their separate ways.
Some servants consume more mana than others and this can at times result in a strain on both characters involved. If the Master is weak or running low on magical energy, a Servant will not be able to function to their full potential. Likewise if a Servant is particularly powerful or uses up a great deal of mana at one time the Master may feel fatigued or drained. Magical energy can be regenerated gradually with rest, or faster through bodily contact such as cuddling, kissing or sex.
Masters and Servants share a mental link that allows them to communicate via telepathically as well as share memories of each other's pasts through dreams.
